ouch...

Thanks to the Victoria line being unexpectedly shut, last night's journey to and from the gig involved buses and changes and my rushing to the bus stop, banging my arm very hard into (I think) the pointt of the timetable sign and dragging it past rather than stepping back and trying again. Arrived hom to find a bright purple swollen bruise the size of a bird's egg explaining the continuing ache in my arm. Arnica has done a little to reduce the heat, swelling and purpleness but it's still mauve, warm, sore and a bit lumpy - and despite not touching a drop of alcohol I woke up with a hangover-level headache. Meh ;-(

Keeping the Web open and mobile

Palm hasn't done so well at getting users and selling devices, but a lot of their strategy is aimed at the longer term; that's my view after talking to Palm’s directors of developer relations, Dion Almaer and Ben Galbraith (some while before the sales figures came out.

Almaer and Galbraith say the mobile Web needs diversity and power - and an open source Facebook application; t it’s all about the power of the open Web. Despite their background with Mozilla Labs (where they were behind the open source Bespin cloud IDE project), they both emphasise the importance of the open Web over any specific browser. “It's important that the platform stays as the Web, not a specific implementation,” says Dion Almaer; “We want Firefox to do well, but you don't want it to be the 90% browser or people will start coding to Firefox instead of the Web.” Read the rest over at The H...

HP gets Cirious about cloud research

HP Labs Singapore is the company's first new lab since Prith Banerjee, worldwide director of HP Labs, took control of its research in 2007 and set out a five-year strategic plan that made cloud computing one of the eight pillars of its research focus.

We asked Banerjee what the new lab will concentrate its research on, how the facility fits in with Open Cirrus and HP's other labs, and how it will feed into the company's cloud services for enterprises. he said it's about security and Singapore ("if we can make a services datacentre cost effective here, then we can do it anywhere").
